Henry Hudson Bridge – Lower Deck Replacement
- Client: MTA Bridges and Tunnels
- Location: New York, NY
- Project Value: $86,304,000
- Time Frame: 21 months
Description:
This project involved replacing the lower level deck of the Henry Hudson Bridge while constantly maintaining traffic on the majority of the bridge. Judlau replaced the entire lower level four-lane bridge deck as well as the northern approach structure.
The existing concrete deck was replaced with a new steel grid deck, with cast-in-place infill and a 2” overfill riding surface.
Scope of Work included:
- Structural steel repairs, upgrades and enhancements.
- Installation of over 825 tons of structural steel.
- Installed/replaced stringers, floor beams, beam supports and seismic retrofits.
Replacing the concrete-framed north approach involved a complex sequence of operations. Judlau had to maintain structural capacity to both the upper and lower levels of the structure, while replacing the concrete structure in stages. This involved partially installing the new structure within the existing one, and a multi-step jack / load transfer to support the upper level columns.
