Reconstruction of Three Bridges
- Client: New York State DOT
- Location: Bronx, NY
- Project Value: $44,243,000
- Time Frame: 36 months
Description:
This project was spread out over three bridge locations, and involved three major intersecting highways (1-95, 1-295 and 1-695).
The 1-95 Bridge consisted of the complete replacement and relocation of a three lane highway bridge and a two lane service road bridge. Traffic was maintained throughout the project, by means of a 2 lane, 200′ long temporary vehicular bridge. Bridge work was performed in two major stages, and highway work was split into three sub-stages to maintain traffic flow. The new bridge was a two-span steel curved continuous girder structure with a cast-in-place reinforced concrete deck.
The 300′ wide x 120′ long East Tremont Avenue Bridge was replaced in one stage, and traffic was maintained through the use of two 2-lane, 200′ long temporary vehicular bridges straddling the work zone. The new bridge superstructure was comprised of pre-stressed NE Bulb Tee Beams, placed on the reconstructed substructures. The center pier was extended on both sides to accommodate the new bridge geometry.
The 1-295 Bridge over Randall Avenue was a deck replacement, done in four stages, maintaining three lanes of traffic in each direction at all times. This 3 span, 24 stringer structure also received a new 3 coat paint system which required a Class 1A full containment system for the required SP-6 lead abatement. The highway portion of the project consisted of a half mile of drainage replacement, one mile of shoulder reconstruction/roadway barrier installation and over 10,000 tons of asphalt paving.
