Jerome Avenue IRT Signal System

The Interboro Rapid Transit Line not only links the Bronx to Manhattan, it is inextricably linked with the history and growth of New York City for the past 90 years, since the end of WWI. Today, the Jerome Avenue IRT line not only brings millions of Bronx commuters in and out of NYC, it brings hundred of thousands more each year to a very special “house” – the House That Ruth Built, better known as Yankee Stadium.

Beginning in December 2005, Judlau, working together with its Judlau Companies Partner, TC Electric, began the installation of 55 new signals on the middle track from 149th Street to Woodlawn Avenue. But before the installation of the new equipment, careful designs for each section of the line were created to ensure that the new signals would integrate with the pre-existing signals. In order to install the new signals, approximately 50 miles of cable were pulled and merged with the existing system. This cable installation will eventually span over 5 ½ miles of the subway system. The 55 signals and sign posts all have to be installed on steel platforms at various locations. The platforms were designed in house, and meticulously installed by Judlau’s own crew of iron workers.

The majority of the Jerome Avenue project is expected to be completed by the end of 2008.
