White Plains Road Line Comprehensive Rehabilitation

  • Client: New York City Transit
  • Location: Bronx, NY
  • Project Value: $210,560,000
  • Time Frame: 48 months

Description:

This project involved the reconstruction of the White Plains Road Line from Bronx Park East to the 241st Street Station. The work included complete removal and replacement of eight elevated subway stations, one new station at Gun Hill Road and the historical restoration of the Bronx Park East Station.

At each station, new public areas were constructed with new art work, porcelain cladding, granite/porcelain tile, new roofing at platform level, electrical/ communication rooms, utility facilities, air-conditioning and rehabilitated agent booths.

The job also included structural steel and concrete repairs to over 4.5 miles of elevated track. The project also included the rehabilitation of a steel structure supporting three tracks for approximately five miles of structure. Approximately 100 General Outages were required and all work was performed while maintaining access for the riding public.

The White Plains Road project included the reconstruction of 11 station mezzanines within the project limits. Nine of these mezzanines were suspended from the main line structure; reconstructing these mezzanines involved installing new structural steel framing/hangers and new floor structures. Temporary shielding was installed to protect vehicular and pedestrian traffic

Temporary platforms were installed to allow pedestrian access to the subway cars that were relocated during the staged track outages. Judlau innovation resulted in the design and implementation of a unique platform system consisting of 50 sections, each 50 feet in length. The system was prefabricated offsite and was flown into place at five stations and then removed and reinstalled as required throughout the staging of the project.

Scope of Work includes:

  • Steel and concrete repairs to over 4.5 miles of elevated track.
  • Street-level repairs to the structure’s columns.
  • Installed over 2,000,000 lbs of steel.
  • Replaced expansion joints.
  • Installed porcelain panels and windscreens.
